Health and Safety for the enterpreneur
Tips for health and safety for a home business
I am a workplace health and safety adviser but as I work for myself I need to make sure when it comes to workplace health and safety I am doing all I can to ensure I am safety and that my actions or in-actions do not cause harm to others. I hope this article gets you thinking about workplace health and safety if you work from home or work for yourself.
What do you need to do?
- Identify your hazards
- Assess the risks
- Assess the likelihood of the hazard causing harm
- Put controls in place to eliminate or minimise your risk.
Workplace hazards
In my case I spend time visiting clients and use my car. I have a hands-free kit and if I am doing videos while driving I have my camera mounted so it doesn’t need to be held and it won’t fall and distract me.
In my home office, I need to ensure I have a fist aid kit, I am a trained first aider because I want to be prepared if a client is injured or needs medical attention. I carefully consider all the things that could go wrong while clients are in my office. If you employ staff you need to also consider what actions or in-actions, they take or may take to keep themselves and others around them safe.
If you visit clients, you might want to consider hazards you might encounter like dogs. If you are working alone, you may need to consider your personal safety.
Emergencies
If you drive your car for work you need to have water, food, first aid kit, a radio, personal medicine you can’t do without and emergency clothing and footwear. If you had an accident or there was any reason you had to walk and leave your car, would you have appropriate clothing and footwear to do this comfortably?
At home, you need a fire extinguisher and emergency supplies and a radio.
